Getting up in the middle of the night to rent a jeep to drive winding and twisting roads at breakneck speed was terrifying and wonderful all at once. There was a lot of caffeine consumed as normal, and Dick felt a little more like himself, keeping hours at this time of night rather then the daylight ones they'd been keeping. When they'd finally made it to Haleakalā National Park before six am so that they could get in before the hundreds of other tourists, Dick was beginning to feel the weight of morning.

"I hope this is worth it. I know this is the highest point in Maui. I feel like I can hardly breathe up here." Before asking for it the Sun began to rise. Leaning against the jeep, Dick quickly and quietly snatched Jason into his arms and held him tight as they watched. "Wow.." He whispered ultra-quietly, unwilling to break the almost sacred spell of this magical feeling moment. Lips rested at Jason's neck, where they always seemed to fit perfectly.

"I never knew a sunrise could be so stunning". This vacation has taught me so much. " He remained there holding Jason for what felt like hours. There was more they could do, but living in this moment, like in so many others they'd had together on this vacation brought them closer together than Dick had ever dreamed.
